‘Opera Lovers’ Box’: Thursday evenings

The idea of organising an ‘open zone’ for lovers of classical music in general, opera in particular and especially the Warsaw Chamber Opera arose from the conviction that the great interest in our institution that was manifested during the famous Mozart Night in June 2012 ought to gain an additional space. It is from our audience that the Warsaw Chamber Opera is receiving new energy for its development.

The title, ‘Opera Lovers’ Box’, refers to theatrical tradition; it is also an invitation to participate in a new type of performer/audience relationship. The designation ‘Thursday Evenings’, in turn, alludes to the Thursday Dinners organised during the reign of King Stanislaus Augustus – an important period in the history of Polish culture. These gatherings are of a participatory, and even club-like, character, integrating music lovers around the Chamber Opera and our musical and cultural heritage. They are held once a month at the WCO Theatre.

Besides its fixed elements, the programme of each gathering depends to a considerable extent on the activeness and ideas of its participants. Each meeting has a host, who is also the author of the theme and the scenario. Short concerts given by artists of the Warsaw Chamber Opera, conversations with artists and invited guests, multimedia shows from the WCO collection and discussion of the history of Polish music and of Polish cultural heritage and its contemporary identity take place in an unconstrained, intimate atmosphere.

The organisers and hosts of the Thursday Evenings include the musicologist and journalist Piotr Maculewicz and the harpsichordist and animator Viola Łabanow. Artists and distinguished figures of Polish musical culture are invited to take part.
